Using variables & merge tags
Auto-fill names, brands, and details so every pitch feels personal.
Variables (also called merge tags) let one template or pitch personalize itself for every contact. Instead of typing a name, you drop in a tag like First Name, and when the email sends it is replaced with that contact's real first name. They work in both the subject line and the email body.
How to insert a variable
You insert variables the same way in a template's subject line or body editor:
- In the body, type @ and a menu of variables appears — keep typing to filter, then pick one.
- On the subject line, click the @ button at the end of the field to open the variable list, then choose a tag.
- The variable shows as a small highlighted chip (for example, the subject placeholder e.g. Quick idea for @brandName). It is a single token, not editable text, so it always resolves cleanly.
Available variables
These are the variables you can insert:
- First Name — the contact's first name
- Last Name — the contact's last name
- Brand Name — the company name
- Email — the contact's email
- Location — the contact's location
- Title — the contact's job title
- Your Name — your full name
- Portfolio Link — your portfolio URL
Check how they render
To see real values in place of the tags, open a template and click Preview. Click Select contact in the top right of the preview and search for one of your actual contacts — the variables resolve to that contact's real details so you can confirm everything fills in correctly. Until you pick a contact, you'll see a Select a contact to resolve merge tags note and the raw tags stay in place.
Tip: If a contact is missing a field, that variable simply fills with what is available — so lean on widely-populated tags like First Name and Brand Name in your most important lines.
